Why Wi-Fi Keeps Disconnecting on Your Laptop

A video call freezes just as you need to speak. Your email stops sending. A page sits loading while every other device in the house seems perfectly fine. If Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting on a laptop, the cause is often fixable without replacing anything – but it helps to work out whether the problem is the laptop, the router or the connection itself.

The key is not to change ten settings at once. Start with a couple of simple checks, then move towards the fixes that match what you are seeing. That saves time and makes it much easier to spot when professional help is the sensible next step.

First, work out where the fault is

Before changing anything on your laptop, test the Wi-Fi on another device in the same room. Use a mobile phone or tablet and try opening a few websites or playing a short video.

If every device drops out, the laptop is unlikely to be the problem. Your broadband service, router or Wi-Fi coverage is the more likely culprit. If only the laptop disconnects while other devices stay online, focus on the laptop’s wireless settings, driver or hardware.

It is also worth noticing the pattern. Does the connection fail only in one room? Does it happen after the laptop wakes from sleep? Does it drop during video calls or when you use Bluetooth headphones? These details point towards different causes and prevent guesswork.

Start with the simple fixes

Restart the laptop first, then switch the router off at the mains, wait 30 seconds and turn it back on. This is not a magic cure, but it clears temporary faults and gives the router a fresh connection to your provider.

Next, move closer to the router and test again. Walls, floors, mirrors and large appliances can weaken Wi-Fi more than people expect. In many Spanish homes, thick internal walls or a router placed at one end of the property can leave rooms with a usable but unreliable signal. A connection that looks strong enough for browsing may still struggle with calls, cloud backups or streaming.

Check that Flight Mode is off and that Wi-Fi is enabled on the laptop. Then disconnect from your network and reconnect by entering the password again. On Windows, select the network icon near the clock, choose your Wi-Fi network, select Disconnect, then connect again. On a Mac, select the Wi-Fi symbol in the menu bar, turn Wi-Fi off briefly, then switch it back on.

If the issue began after visiting a hotel, café or another home, the laptop may be trying to reconnect to an old saved network. Removing old networks you no longer use can reduce confusion, particularly where several networks have similar names.

Why Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting on a laptop

A laptop does not simply receive Wi-Fi. Its wireless adapter, operating system, power settings and security software all play a part. That is why a router can work well for a mobile phone but still cause trouble on one particular computer.

The laptop is saving power too aggressively

Windows laptops may switch off the wireless adapter to conserve battery power. This can be helpful on a long journey, but less helpful when you are working from home and need a stable connection.

On Windows, open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click the Wi-Fi adapter and choose Properties. In the Power Management tab, untick the option that allows the computer to turn off the device to save power. The wording can vary slightly between laptop models.

Also check your power mode. A battery-saving setting can limit performance in ways that become noticeable during calls or larger downloads. You do not need maximum performance all day, but it is worth testing a balanced or plugged-in setting if dropouts happen mainly on battery.

An outdated or faulty Wi-Fi driver

The driver is the small piece of software that lets Windows communicate with the wireless hardware. A bad update, an old driver or a driver designed for a previous version of Windows can cause random disconnections.

Start by installing normal system updates and restarting afterwards. If that does not help, check the laptop manufacturer’s support software or website for a Wi-Fi driver made specifically for your model. Manufacturer drivers are usually preferable to downloading a random driver from an unfamiliar website.

If the problem appeared immediately after an update, rolling back the driver can sometimes help. This is one of those cases where the best option depends on timing: newer is not always better if a particular update introduced the fault.

The router is using a crowded wireless channel

In blocks of flats, urban areas and busy neighbourhoods, many nearby routers compete for the same wireless space. The result can be slow speeds, intermittent dropouts and calls that sound fine one minute and break up the next.

Modern routers often offer both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. The 2.4 GHz band travels further and copes better with walls, but is usually more crowded. The 5 GHz band is generally faster and less congested nearby, although its range is shorter. If your laptop is close to the router, trying the 5 GHz network may improve stability. If you are at the far end of the house, 2.4 GHz may be the more dependable choice.

Some newer routers also offer 6 GHz. It can be excellent at short range with compatible devices, but it will not solve a coverage problem through several walls.

Bluetooth or USB devices are interfering

Bluetooth accessories, wireless keyboards and some USB 3 devices can interfere with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. This does not happen in every setup, but it is easy to test. Disconnect nearby USB hubs or external drives, switch Bluetooth off temporarily and see whether the connection becomes stable.

If it does, you may only need to reposition the accessories, use a different USB port or connect to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi network. There is no need to abandon useful equipment before testing the simpler solution.

Security software or a VPN is interrupting traffic

A VPN can make it look as though Wi-Fi has disconnected when the wireless signal is actually fine but the secure connection has dropped. The same can happen with security software that has a faulty network filter.

Try using the laptop briefly with the VPN disconnected, provided you are on a trusted home network and not handling sensitive work. If that resolves the problem, update or review the VPN settings rather than leaving it permanently disabled. For work laptops, check with the employer or IT provider before making major changes.

Reset network settings if ordinary fixes fail

When a laptop has accumulated old networks, unusual DNS settings or damaged network configuration, a network reset can provide a clean start. On Windows, search for Network reset in Settings. This removes and reinstalls network adapters and forgets saved Wi-Fi networks, so make sure you know your Wi-Fi password first.

On a Mac, first try forgetting the affected Wi-Fi network and adding it again. If the fault continues, checking network settings and any installed profiles may be necessary. Managed work devices can have profiles that should not be removed without advice.

Network resets are useful, but they are not the first move. They can remove VPN settings, printer connections and other saved details. Use one once the basic checks have not solved the issue, not simply because the connection had one bad afternoon.

Improve the Wi-Fi around the home

If the laptop disconnects only in a particular room, the answer may be better coverage rather than a laptop repair. Moving the router into a more central, open position can make a real difference. Avoid placing it inside a cupboard, behind a television or on the floor beside other electronics.

For larger homes, a mesh Wi-Fi system or correctly positioned access point can be a better long-term fix than a cheap signal booster. Extenders have their place, but they can reduce speed or create a second network that devices do not switch between neatly. The right choice depends on the layout of the property, the broadband speed and how you use the connection.

For a fixed desk used for remote work, an Ethernet cable remains the most stable option. It is not always the tidiest solution, but it avoids wireless interference altogether. Powerline adapters can also help in some homes, although their performance depends heavily on the electrical wiring.

When to get the laptop checked

If only one laptop repeatedly loses Wi-Fi after updates, driver checks and a network reset, the wireless adapter itself may be failing. Warning signs include the Wi-Fi option disappearing completely, the adapter showing an error in Device Manager, or the laptop only connecting when held at an unusual angle.

A technician can test the hardware, check for software conflicts and advise whether a repair, internal adapter replacement or small external Wi-Fi adapter makes the most sense. For many older laptops, a practical upgrade can be better value than a major repair.
